Napoli wore pearls yesterday

When light bounces off the sea, then rises up through blue sky towards the sun it takes your heart with it … at least it does on the seafront in Naples, Italy.  It’s impossible to resist, like a balloon freed by the breeze, up and up it goes.

Yesterday was one of those days.

It was such a gift after a warm December where smog had caused whole days to droop, and Vesuvius to sulk in the shadows.

Who knows what is where?

Who knows what is where?

Nothing feels quite right if the eyes can’t travel from the volcano, over a clear sea to Capri.  On such days the city is without its frame, and who knows what is where.

Yesterday was not like that because we could see exactly where everything was.  After two days of rain the sky was so clear we could pick out fishing boats in the waves.

Through warm windows we could count the lovers on the Lungomare.

We could have pizza and coffee, and not count the hours.

We could feel the breeze in the evening sun.

We could salute Vesuvius as the sails came down.

It was beautiful – whoever you were.
